Advice needed on clutch/gearbox problem on Ford Ka?

I have a 2004 Ford Ka and today experienced problems when changing gear.

I had trouble getting it into gear (it felt 'crunchy' and I kept slipping into the wrong gear). The engine also sounded like it was revving and racing, even when not trying to change gear.

As you can tell, I'm no car expert! I'm thinking it may be a clutch problem (or gearbox?).

I know I need to get it to a garage ASAP, but any thoughts on what might be wrong will be greatly welcomed so I can gear myself up for whatever bill may be to come and so that I don't look like a dimwit when I call the garage...

And if anyone knows of a good local garage in Preston/Chorley/Leyland - please let me know.

Thanks!Advice needed on clutch/gearbox problem on Ford Ka?
it does sound like your clutch is at fault.i havnt had to change a gearbox on any ka yet.shop around for a price and check you are getting all 3 parts of the clutch replaced.the bearing the friction plate and the clutch pressure plate.around 350 all in and you should end up with a 2 yr guarantee on the parts beware of cheap quotes they may only replace the plate good luck with itAdvice needed on clutch/gearbox problem on Ford Ka?
hhmm difficultly to analyse from that info but ... possible clutch problem will if clutch is badly worn cause a possible crunching sound as gears are still turning in gearbox when you are trying to change gear! also engine revving when you are not changing gear is that when you are trying to accelerate? if so it means clutch plate (disc ) is worn and needs renewing , best to have complete clutch assembly changed including release bearing.

It is possible! form your description you also have a slight gear linkage misalignment but when a clutch is changed they should reset that. get two quotes at least and a guarantee before having work done. Ford are reliable but pricey. no idea as to your local clutch specialists though. word of mouth may be best.
Well, if the engine ';races'; when the car is in gear and you are trying to move forward with the clutch pedal out, then your clutch is likely worn out. If you can't get it into gear at all (won't go from neutral into gear without nasty crunching) or lurches forward when you try to force it into gear - then your clutch is not disengaging properly. The crunchy sounds are hard on the gearbox, get it in to be looked at....
Your clutch is slipping and probably needs replacing
sorry. you need a new clutch. about 300 quid.
