Yeah, in band my violin got set on my stand (someone put it there...) ONLY on the hairs for a few minutes...and now the tone/performance seems off. I know that touching it with the hands/fingers is bad because of the oils and all, but it only sat on my stand. Any help on how to clean it off? Is it even fixable? (I sure hope so...)Violin Bow Problem; got set only on the hairs for a few minutes on my music stand. Cleaning advice?
It's possible that if your music stand is used for a band class, then there might have been a few drops of valve oil or something on the stand that got on the hairs. If that is the case, then it will be absolutely necessary to clean the hairs for them to work right again. I've hear over the years that denatured rubbing alcohol on a cloth rubbed over the hairs will work. Just be careful not to get any on the bow stick. What I have always done, though, is wash the bow hair. Some people will say don't do it, although I'm not sure why. It IS hair, of course, and I've never had a problem with my bows as a result. You just have to apply a ton of rosin afterwards because it will be completely bare afterwards. What I do is unscrew the frog and (careful to only get the hair wet), clean the hairs with mild soap in a sink. Be careful not to get them twisted up. After rinsing, blot excess water with a towel, screw the frog back on (but don't tighten until the hair dries), and leave the bow out of the case in a safe place until it dries. It wouldn't hurt to give it one more swipe with a towel at this point, and make sure there aren't any water drops on the stick.Violin Bow Problem; got set only on the hairs for a few minutes on my music stand. One approach to addressing this is to reapply rosin to the bow. Oils and other substances (including dust) can cause a lose of friction which affects the overall tone. Applying rosin should allow the bow to regain it's friction and original tone/quality. Below is a link to a resource that illustrates how to properly apply rosin (in case you need it).
