QUESTION IS QUITE LONG THOUGH SO EVERYONE PLEASE STAY WITH ME.Well I'm unemployed as I was a temp at Argos for Christmas but they didn't keep me on, an the credit crunch has made everything hard and I am now signing on, and was told by the person who works in the job centre that I might be able to claim housing benefit even though I live in a private place with a landlord that I pay to every month, he said that all I would have to do was to have a word with my landlord try to see if I can get the tenancy agreement back, but I have 760 pounds in the bank for myself from my last job do you think it's worth me asking my landlord as it might make things easier for me and I have been there for about 2 years now and have always paid my rent on time and was told by one of the other housemates that I am liked, should I sort some kind of housing benefit out or just use the money in the bank?Am I entitled to it as I pay 260 per month - what do I do I'm confused?I told the person in the job centre that I hope to have a job in a months time and that I wont be signing on for long but he said what if I don't have a job in a month's time, he might have been right I mean with the credit crunch things are a bit harder.I don't want to make the wrong move and end up on the street, what do I do - Ignorance Is Bliss!!!What if I talk to the landlord and get in trouble for mentioning it as the landlord thinks that I wont have enough money to pay the rent?Or what if the lanlord tells me that I'm not able to do such a thing from that address?I did'nt know that people were allowed to clam housing benefit in private adresses but the guy at the jobcentre said it was possible, what do I do do I take a chance and ask?I dont want to mess anything up!!!The guy at the jobcentre just gave me the number for housing benefit and told me to just go away and think about it, do I wait until I have ran out of money to pay the rent and then claim housing benefit or do I try to claim some now?I was finding things a bit hard as I did want a laptop as I want to be a scriptwriter!!!How do I practically and sensibly do things right?

I WAS ALWAYS TOLD THAT ';IF YOU DONT ASK IN LIFE, YOU DONT GET';!!!Do I need the money?I need help and advice as I have a problem, can mature and responsible people out there help me please the ?
You will be able to claim housing benefit with that amount in the bank for sure.It does take a few weeks for them to start paying but they will back date it and send you or your landlord the payment. If the landlord is not willing to wait for his rent then pay him from your savings and ask the council to put the payment in your bank account then you will get back what you have already paid plus future payments, you just give the future payments to the landlord.I hope you manage to find another job soon, good luck.I need help and advice as I have a problem, can mature and responsible people out there help me please the ?
Speak to your landlord. It doesn't matter that you have a few hundred in the bank...you need (I believe) 拢16k before they refuse application. You date the application for Housing Beneft from the date you left your job. As long as you were ';let go'; and didn't resign or get fired, then you are ok. The main thing is to BE HONEST WITH THE LANDLORD...you don't have to mention how much you have saved. Secondly MAKE AN APPLICATION WITH HOUSING BENEFIT office NOW.
Of course you can claim and are entitled to housing benefit. If you didn't have savings how would you survive on 拢60 a week ,that would only cover your rent then you would starve.Make an appointment with your local housing benefit office and they will do the rest.
Firstly, a lot of private landlords take housing benefit as payment and if you aren't working you are entitled to claim for it. Just ask your landlord if he would accept housing benefit if it becomes necessary? At least this way he is guaranteed payment every month. As for the money you have in the bank, well its going to take a few weeks to sort out your housing benefit claim so you are going to need that money to live on, cos JSA aint much now is it? There shouldnt be any way your landlord can put you out if you have an occupancy agreement. You have rights. Visit your local CAB and ask them to explain it all for you and help sort it. Good luck.
1. If would be benefit fraud if you claimed and had that money
BUT I actually see your problem in a different way. Many many many Landlords will not accept housing benefit tenants anyhow - yours may well be one.
Hi there.
Talk to the landlord and if no problem, get your claim in as soon as you can - your claim will be paid from the day you put it in, so don't wait.
Don't worry about your 拢760, that is not enough to change your claim so just go for it.
You shouldn't need to lie, your situation is quite common.
Good luck, Steve.
